SOFT012 Kevin Purdy - S/T

In 2011 after completing and launching Deviant Nature, Kevin borrowed Christian Houllemare's magic Gibson acoustic guitar and snuck off, with his partner Amanda, to the country, where, in a swirl of inspiration composed another album's worth of tunes. The idea was, get the Deviant Nature band together and create the next album, but that didn't happen, the band dissipated into other projects and Kevin shelved the album. Fast forward to 2019 and the idea of resurrecting the tunes became an obsession, firstly adding 3 of the tunes to the Geoff Kevin album 'Avoidance' with Geoff Towner and the rebirthing and reconstructing of the rest for this, his next, and 7th album. This album, not unlike his first album 'Kevolution' has such a long gestation period that digs deeply into his life over those years and the mind journeys he has been traveling, spending lengthy periods in the Australian outback, reading volumes on Indigenous and settler/invader history, as well rediscovering his own. All of this penetrates and is the essence of the album.
The album's featured guest artists are: Penny McBride - Trumpet, Amanda Stewart - Voice, Joe Cannon - Vocals, Geoff Towner - Bass, Paula Henderson - Baritone Saxophone and Peter Hollo - Cello.
Kevin plays most things and sings and directs the show, except for mastering which is left in the exceptional hands of William Bowden.

SOFT009 Body Variations - Purdy

LP/DL

Purdy's passion for taking the listener on a cinematic journey with his work has never been so strongly accomplished as with this, his fifth solo album, 'Body Variations'.
Body Variations is a suite, a song cycle, an extended work. Whatever you might call it, it's a glorious sonic adventure, where the movements, tingle, carress, stab, comfort and rock. This album is to be heard as a whole, a whole body experience you might say.
For 40 and a bit minutes Purdy conducts this wonderfully complex work through its stages, with bountiful assistance from John Maddox on Bass and Peter Hollo on cello. Layout and design by Erica Olsen @ Olsenwells. Mastering by William Bowden @ King Willy Sound.
The album has been released as an LP and download through MGM Distribution

SOFT008 Illumination - Kevin Purdy
LP/DL

Illumination, the third album and first LP by Kevin Purdy aka Purdy.
Illumination is a collection of ambient and minimalist soundscapes recorded over the past five years.
Purdy has stripped back his usual multilayered production sound, creating a wonderfully dark yet illuminated journey. As this is a completely different release than other Purdy works it has been released under his full name.
Illumination features Kevin's muse and partner Amanda Stewart (poet, performer, Machines For Making Sense, Metalog, etc etc) on the track Cloud Shadows on Hill.
The instrumentation is pared back to a minimal palette of synth and ebo guitar, adding to that, field recordings, found sounds and so on. Mountains Dreaming is the only exception production wise, utilising loops and percussion throughout a minimalist dub soundscape which combines the natural landscape with the industrial. Coming back to the city, the sound of soot.

SOFT006 - Mudlarking - Tooth
CD/DL
So what happened to the 2 years leading up to the release of this spectacular double album tour de-force by 'Mudlarking' by Tooth? Well they were spent head down in the studio, that's where. 'Mudlarking' takes Tooth to musical heights unexpected from a humble Sydney combo. Shaping & shifting from sweet subtle exotica, to hardened Moog laced prog stylings and all points in-between. Once again with a mighty gang of guest artists, including the legendary Daevid Allen (Gong, Soft Machine, poet, evolutionary), this fab double album monster, with is glorious gatefold design and layout is definitely one of the coolest things to emerge out of Oz for some time.

SOFT004 - Shift / The Sons of Shade - Tooth
12"SINGLE

The 2004 release 'Shift' b/w 'The sons of shade' a stomping 12" by Tooth. Delving deeply into progxotic sounds and motoric grooves. This lovely 12", once again on big fat Czech vinyl, takes the listener places only Tooth could conjure. The midway point between Sirens... and Mudlarking, this shows the Tooth lads stretching themselves into the directions Mudlarking would encapsulate.

SOFTOO3 - Sirens From Here To Titan - Tooth

CD/DL

In 1998 Tooth (Purdy & Sir Robbo) released their 1st album independently, with no actual label. The album 'No Strings' became an instant classic, with its thick syrupy dope textures, bent grooves and melodies. This album pathed the way for Tooth's personal psychedelic aspirations to flourish, with their 2nd album 'Sirens From Here To Titan' taking things even further. With its inner / outer space themes, all shimmering and throbbing throughout this classic work. John Maddox, who had become a member of the band, forged a powerful unity in the band making thing the music stronger and more unified. This album has stood the test of time and become somewhat of a 'classic'.

Guests: Peter Hollo, Tim Hollo

SOFT002 - Tyranikal - Purdy
12" EP

Soft Records next release, the 12" EP 'Tyranikal' by Purdy had the title track, a wonderfully abstract piece of Afroglitch stomp, about as close a Purdy ever got to making dance music, but remains wonderfully off-kilter. The 3 re-mixes are by The Kooky Kids (Johnny & Gemma), Infusion and an alt mix by Purdy. This lovely 12" pressed on 180 g vinyl in the Czech Republic, featuring Krishna & Rhada cavorting on the cover. 'Tyranikal' definitely had its fun in the sun for a spell, appearing on comps around the globe and on the local front making kids all gitchy on the dance floor.
